Introducing one of our lovely ladies from the  40 over 40 project!

 WHAT IS YOUR OCCUPATION? I’m retired. Spent 30 years in health and social care and now enjoying going to the gym and gardening.

HOW OLD ARE YOU – AND WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING YOUR AGE? 63. I feel better in my 60’s than ever before. Comfortable in my skin, happy with my hair and dress in bright colours because I don’t care what people think any more!

WHAT HARDSHIPS HAVE YOU ENDURED THAT YOU FEEL HAVE MADE YOU FEEL STRONGER? I lost my beloved husband Trevor last October after a very short and agonising battle with bone cancer. 10 weeks from diagnosis to death. Whilst caring for him I was also project managing a new kitchen. I thought at the time that if I can get through this I can get through anything. As the first anniversary of his death approaches I am finding it much harder.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER IS YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT? That’s a difficult one. It would be either riding the fastest zip wire in the world, which was my 60th birthday present from Trevor. He did it too, despite being afraid of heights. So possibly more of an achievement for him than me! Or possibly creating a website for families of children with special needs with a tiny budget. It involved many different professionals and lots of negotiating and conflict, but staying firm in my direction. My Director described me as a ‘terrier’. Despite misgivings from many places, the charity representing the family loved it and gave me a special award. My validation was when it was so well received that a neighbouring Local Authority asked me to design their website too.

WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS? Having my husband back. ☹️ But as that isn’t going to happen, being on a quiet beach in the sunshine with a book and a cold drink.

WHAT DO YOU TREASURE MOST? A video of Trevor. He was on the national news in 2012 for a fishing achievement and I recently managed to obtain a copy of the interview from the TV company. It’s the only video I have of him.

WHAT’S LEFT ON YOUR BUCKET LIST? Travelling. There are so many places I want to visit. Also maybe living by the sea.

WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST EXTRAVAGANCE? Probably these photos as I suspect I will want to buy loads!

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WOULD CHANGE ABOUT YOURSELF? I would like to be a stone lighter and to be able to stay there without constant dieting. I would also love to be able to sing.

WHAT IS A TRAIT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF? I think I am a good listener.

WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST FEAR? Getting really sick and having no one to look after me.

WHAT DO YOU MOST VALUE IN YOUR FRIENDS? I class a friend as someone I can phone at 2am and they won’t be annoyed with me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? You are pretty. You are pretty. You are pretty.
